Curriculum

The prime directive of this club is to provide a place where one can learn and practice a fighting art. This is accomplished in a step by step process of Kihon (basic techniques), Katas (forms) and Kumite (basic 3 step, semi and free style fighting). Novices start learning basics and then gradually forms plus the various steps of fighting and self defense. At  the first black belt level, it is hoped the student will have learned the basic skills, several forms and adequate fighting ability. This will lay the groundwork for moving to the advanced levels of perfecting one’s fighting and self defense skills which can be applied in real life situations.

It is hoped that learning and practicing these skills will enable one to become more self confident and that, strange as it may sound, the student may never have to put these skills to the test. While this may seem unusual, the purpose of Eastern Karate is not to produce professional fighters, rather secure individuals who can go through life without fear of the unknown threat around the next corner. There will be some who have a genuine fear of fighting so the step by step approach is one that will produce results. All training is done in a safe environment and students will be gently guided to reach their potential. This is especially helpful for women who generally are more vulnerable in today’s world and are not used to physically defending themselves. We encourage everyone to take up the challenge, to gain control and become more confident. It is my belief that karate can accomplish this and more.
